About Us

Mission
The purpose of the Club is to operate as a non-profit, non-political and non-religious organization with the objective of fostering closer cooperation amongst members in social and cultural activities and introducing Indonesian art and culture to Canadians in general

History
1970 -1983
In the early of 1970, there were only about 6 or 7 families original from Indonesia living in Calgary. The families gathered on the weekends for social activities like playing cards, ping pong, potluck supper and outdoor activities like camping and picnics and great New Year's Eve parties at one of their residence.

By the late 1970, the number of families had grown to be more than 40. Most of the Newcomers introduced themselves at the Heritage Day Festival on the Prince Island Park, where a group of Indonesians had food booths. The idea of forming a club came from Peter Ort, Rennis Alamsjah, Eddie Sachri, Margeret Vitalis, Djian and Vero Rahardjo, Bella Kasim and Hans Sugianto. They started discussing on how to form a club. As none of them had any executive experience, it was really a hard time for them. However, with the help and advice from the Calgary Multicultural Centre and the Corporate Registry in Edmonton, the group spent several weeks drafting the basic and fundamental club rules and bylaws to run a registered society. These meetings were held alternatively at the homes of the group members.

1983-1992
The first general meeting was held on September 18, 1983 at the old Bali Restaurant, where they received considerable help from Ina and Alam. From 75 registered members, 68 peoples attended the meeting. The Board members were elected with Peter Ort as the President, Rennis Alamsjah as Vice President, Margaret Vitalis as Secretary and Djian Rahardjo as Treasurer. A copy of the Club's constitution was submitted to the registry in Edmonton and since October 6, 1983, the club has been legally certified as a non-profit Corporate Society. During these years, many members gave their time and energy to serve as a president and officers of the club. Past presidents were: Alice Vloerberg, Marcel Potier, Peter Wenas, Jack Vitalis, Lina Asensio, and Joe Swen.

1992-1994
During this time the club experienced a bad situation. We had to put the club on hold for 2 years for lack of interest to assume the presidency and director positions.

1994-present
Renewed enthusiasm brought the club back to active status. Many social events were organized such as: the Easter egg hunt, Father's day treasure hunt and picnic, the Stampede breakfast and many wonderful Pasar Malam with Indonesian cultural dances, an angklung orchestra, traditional fashion shows and ethnic food. These events were possible, because the club got money from their participation in Bingo's and Casinos.

We only had two presidents during this time period: Bill Wouters and Shahmanul Alam. Many of the directors have held their position for many years and doing an excellent job for our club. We successfully continued the events set in the nineties. Our club is flourishing, the membership is growing and our financial status is healthy.
